Blue-eyed Darner dragonfly

We had been around Brydon Lagoon once already without seeing any dragonflies, then several skidded to a stop on the branches in front of us at the same time. This one stopped first, letting me snap a few shots, then another flitted in, and this one took off. This is what jewellers mimic a lot of their fancy jewellery after.

It's interesting to compare this guy with a California Darner (taken less than half an hour from where this one was snapped). From a distance they look like brothers. Close up, the differences start to appear. They both have intricate puzzle pieces of browns and blues laid together, but the California lacks the stripes the Blue-eyed has on its back, and the Blue-eyed lacks the black stripe the Cal has on its forehead.
