I have only seen a few Hummingbirds in the wild, scorching past at lightning speeds along trails between brush on one side, and branches on the other. And I wouldn't have noticed this one either, except Paul's eagle eyes caught himresting at the top of a still-bare tree.Tiny leaf buds were barely evident, so they didn't obscure the bird at the top - and it was tiny as well. A female Red-winged Blackbird was perched nearby and it was enormous compared to this little fellow. I'm not sure how long it rested, but shortly after we noticed it, it took flight to another tree, then took off again for parts unknown.

With the darker late afternoon lighting and dark cloud cover (lightened in order to bring out the bird's colouring), it was hard to determine what we had until we got home. The brilliant magenta bib narrowed it down to an Anna's Hummingbird. And had it been a duller female, I'm not sure we would have been able to determine what kind of Hummingbird it was from that distance.
