immature Red-tailed hawk

These keen-eyed hunters are the most common hawks in North America, covering territory from Latin America, through the northern reaches of Canada, and Alaska. Though they prefer open ranges for hunting - perching on branches high above fields to watch for movement of mice and voles - they're adapatable to the urban landscape - choosing hydro poles to scan for rats and other prey.

In addition to their visual accuity being two to three times as great as ours, their retinas have evolved to process more data per second than we can, so they have the ability to react extremely quickly to a changing landscape.
