female Ruddy Duck - Brydon Lagoon

We saw this tiny duck diving repeatedly at Brydon Lagoon, and when I got home to check the shots out I first anticipated from the size of its beak that it was a Northern Shoveler female, or young male. Because this is a diving bird though, and not a dabbler as the Shoveler is .. I checked further to see what it would be. After a little more searching, I found that it's a female Ruddy Duck.

Ruddies are non-breeding season residents in the Greater Vancouver region, however this is the first time we had ever seen one. And though we didn't see it with its tail stiffly erect, that's often how they're seen.
