Greater Scaup

The little pond this Scaup was in close to the Fraser River, had quite a few ducks on the surface. At a distance, some of them were easy to identify, but even on the computer, this one posed some tough decisions. Lesser and Greater Scaups look so much alike, that it can be hard to tell them apart without them being together. Greaters are slightly bigger, they have fuller, more rounded heads - while the Lessers have pointier skulls - and the Greaters have a dark green sheen in the light, whereas Lessers tend to show deep purple. The eyes are also slightly different, with the Greaters having more clear gold, and the Lessers having a deeper, richer amber.
