Lesser Scaups

From a distance, it's hard to tell the difference between Lesser and Greater Scaups. And my first inclination is usually that I'm looking at a Greater Scaup, but more often than not, I seem to be finding Lesser Scaups.

Though their heads can both show a dark green iridenscence in different lighting conditions, only the Lessers also have a purple sheen in some light. Lessers are also smaller in size, and have smaller beaks, but those comparative differences are harder to discern. The purple head - like this one's - is a great identifier.
