The Coots don't glide in the water like most ducks. They pump their bodies back and forth, like kids on swings gaining momentum. Look at their lobed feet (as compared to a duck's webbed feet), and you can see why it takes a little extra effort to get where they're going. They almost appear to be wearing clown shoes.
