Slender-tailed Meerkat standing up

Meerkats live in colonies of up to 50 animals, but often no more than 30. They have a dominant pair, and helpers of both sexes who act as baby sitters for new pups, and sentries when the group is foraging - a job that usually rotates at about an hour. They are extremely well honed at digging, and in a year may dig as many as 65 burrows throughout their 3 square kilometre home range.
