Mourning Cloak butterfly

We saw several Mourning Cloak butterflies over the last two weekends in March, and though I hadn't anticipated seeing any for a number of weeks at least, these colourful guys really heralded the new season, and the warmer weather. We also saw a number of Cabbage White butterflies, but they were nothing compared to this guy. The only problem was that this early spring flitter seldom landed, and when it did it wasn't at the right angle to get good shots. It was so fast that as soon as I got close enough to get a good distance shot, it was gone. We must have had a good 10 opportunities at least to snap one, but they were always too fast in their getaways for success.
