There are a number of Dragonflies with similar checkerboard patterning along their abdomens, but this one was apparently named appropriately for it. Some have compared its pattern to that of a snake - so the name fits quite nicely. This one darted quickly for a landing near our feet, then stayed for a bit until it was time to show off its flying skills again.
