red dragonfly - male Cherry-faced Meadowhawk

Dragonflies have a tiny spot towards the outside of the leading edge of their wings called stigmas. In this case, you can see the bright red stigmas on this Meadowhawk's forewings. Some say they are used to signal mates, as well as for providing engineering qualities of controlling wing vibrations.
