News Calgary Zoo - part 1
prev nextWe hadn't been to the Calgary Zoo before this year, and except for articles a few years back following flooding in Calgary that affectced the zoo, I wasn't aware of their incredible site. But a few people talked to us about it when we planned this trip, so we included it. From simple, but incredible metal sculptures along the entranceway, carvings on the concrete walls into the zoo, and special fabric lanterns dotting the facility, they really made it a place to visit again and again.
One hump, or two? The Bactrian Camels are two-humpers, and they're native to Asia. Though I've seen them before in movies, books, and zoos, I'd never noticed the long beard growing from just under the chin along the neckline, to the bottom curve of the neck. Through the colder months, they grow thick pelts of fur, and come the spring and summer, the fur is shed; the fur gets so thick it almost looks like they could be bred for their wool.
We saw these boys' girls when we were driving through the Rocky Mountains a few years ago, but the boys appeared to be missing in action that time. It was nice then to get a few shots of these impressive males with their massive horns. Through the Rockies and the areas surrounding them, you may see them, but you're pretty well assured to see them when you visit the zoo, so I'd go back to the zoo again.
Please feel free to share, click on the pictures for more details, and check back for more shots from the zoo.
