Once we had planned our trip with a stop at the Calgary Zoo, I looked forward to it like a child going to Disneyland. And it didn't disappoint.

Whooping Crane  I'm used to seeing the Sandhill Cranes at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in the Greater Vancouver area. Whooping Cranes and Sandhills are both large birds, and very similar looking. Striking like a model with long legs with the grace of a Swan's elegant neck.

Giraffe

It's hard to imagine, but if this Giraffe was reaching into the tops of the trees behind it for twigs and leaves to eat, it could be stretching with a tongue of up to 20 inches in length. Long enough to get the last bit of milkshake out of glass withou using a straw.

Red River Hog   Red River Hogs are omnivorous, so as much as they'll spend time rooting around for tubers and other vegetation to eat, they'll also eat other small critters. With those snouts they're able to dig up and through all kinds of vegetation, so they're often the bane of African farmers.

Please feel free to share, click on the pictures for more details, and check back for more shots from the zoo.
